Allora, I am Maria. An Italo-Australian who has been living here in Italy for the past 9 years. During this time I have been so lucky to have met with some wonderful guides and people who love to discover, as I do, places out of the normal “tourist routes.” My roots are in Apromonte, my heart is also there, but there is not a place in which I do not love in Italy.

Le mie radici sono in Aspromonte e anche il mio cuore è lì, non c’è un posto in Italia che io non ami.]
Da quanto tempo ti dedichi all’escursionismo?
I have been an avid walker or excursionist for as long as I can remember.
[Sono un’appassionata camminatrice ed escursionista da che io mi ricordi.]
Come hai cominciato?
I started in Australia, but really took a love for “slow” travel, walking and seeing new places when I arrived here in Italy in 2011

Cosa ti piace dell’Aspromonte?
Everything. There is so much that I love that it would take more than 10 lines to tell you. When we meet I will tell you. Until then each and everyone has a right to find what they like about it.
[Tutto. C’è così tanto che amo che non basterebbero 10 righe per raccontarlo. Te lo dirò quando ci vedremo. Fino ad allora, ognuno di noi ha il diritto di scoprire cosa gli piace.]
Consiglieresti ad uno “straniero” di venire in Aspromonte o pensi debba rimanere un posto per pochi?
WELL YES! I mean I would like to bring every man and his dog to experience Aspromonte. It is not a place which needs to be hidden or for the small population of those “who may like it” no no it is a place in which almost everyone will love. From the little villages in which you may pass through to the natural surroundings, then to those places which have been left, once lived amongst now taken over by mother earth.
[BEH, Sì! Insomma, mi piacerebbe portare chiunque a provare l’esperienza Aspromonte. Non è un posto che ha bisogno di essere nascosto o riservato a quei pochi “a cui potrebbe piacere”, no no, è un posto di cui quasi tutti si innamoreranno. Dai piccoli borghi che puoi attraversare, alla natura intorno, fino a quei posti in cui una volta c’era vita e che adesso sono stati sopraffatti dalla madre terra.]
Quali sono le problematiche che riscontri quando vai in escursione?
…There is no limits. As long as you know where you are going nothing can be disounted.
[Non ci sono limiti. Fintanto che tu sai dove andare, niente può essere sminuito.]
E i punti di forza?
…It’s the south, this alone is its strength, the people, the produce, the hidden gems, and our GUIDES who are now opening a new world to many, sharing stories and even a little of the history.
[È il Sud, già solo questo è la sua forza, la gente, i prodotti, i tesori nascosti e le nostre GUIDE che adesso stanno aprendo nuovi mondi a molti, condividendone le leggende e anche un po’ di storia.]

Overnight stay with Angie and C/- on Montalto…discovering the way up from Zervò to another part of the mountain with my cousin, awakening to the view of this wonderous area, sharing time with locals
[Il pernottamento a Montalto con Angie (c’est moi n.d.r. 😆)… La scoperta del sentiero che da Zervò porta da tutt’altra parte della montagna con mio cugino, svegliarsi con la vista su questa area meravigliosa, passare del tempo con la gente del posto…]
C’è un posto in particolare che vorresti visitare appena possibile?
…Yes, many one is the phantom villages which are no longer populated
[Sì, tantissimi, tra cui i paesi fantasma che non sono più abitati.]
Uno in cui torneresti volentieri?
…Every single place. I never tire of revisiting.
[Ogni singolo posto. Non mi stanco mai di tornare.]
